KAPCSÁNDY FAMILY WINES
Location: United States, California, Napa Valley
In January of 2000, the Kapcsándys' dream became a reality when they discovered a famous 20-acre parcel with its vineyard ripped out after being destroyed by Phylloxera. In May, 2000 they closed on the former Beringer Estate, State Lane vineyard that was, for many years the home of the legendary Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon program.
The Kapcsándys' commenced upon a complete replant of the vineyard to 15 specific blocks, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. One full year before setting in rootstocks, they farmed the entire field to encourage an invigoration of nutrients and also installed a major drainage field before the re-planting. In 2005, a state of the art winery was completed on the property, to allow for maximum precision throughout the winemaking process.
Lou Kapcsándy’s background in engineering has carried over to his winemaking process with the introduction of multiple innovative techniques to his vineyard and winery, including custom equipment and machinery in the cellar. He was also a pioneer of row direction in the vineyard, to take advantages of the vineyards position, allowing it to fully benefit from the cool breezes coming in from the west. The importance of row direction is now being preached and duplicated by others throughout the valley.
The Family’s attention to detail is second to none, everything from the vineyard management to the sorting table, to the cellar floors is meticulously thought out and given extreme attention. This precision results in a perfect environment for making wine, which is evident is each bottle they produce.
Today, Lou and Louis Kapcsándy work with Anthony Arcudi as their winemaking consultant to produce four flagship wines; The ‘Grand Vin’, Roberta’s Reserve, Rapszodia and the Estate Cuvée. They also produce a Port-style desert wine, ‘Vino del Sol’ and a white made in the style of a dry Tokaji. Everything they bottle reflects the precision and fine attention to detail that goes into making each wine.
