ROBERT BIALE Zinfandel, 'Rockpile Vineyard' 2014

The 2014 Robert Biale 'Rockpile Vineyard' Zinfandel is an exceedingly good wine. The Rockpile Vineyard is located at the northwest edge of Dry Creek Valley where the two appellations actually overlap. Although the Rockpile Vineyard is located just 13 miles from the coast, Lake Sonoma provides an inversion layer that prevents the heavier fog that usually blankets other Northern California appellations, which leads to more sun exposure. Having a darker fruit aromatic profile, the wine begins with a bouquet of black olive, black cherry, black plum, black raspberry and hints of milk chocolate. There are deep flavors of black cherry, prune, black plum, coffee grounds and blueberry compote. Showing its masculine edge, this is plush, exotic and beautifully textured Zinfandel that will cellar gracefully into the next decade. (Best 2016-2027) - June, 2016 (OB)
