Get ready for the 2021 Stonessence Syrah from winemaker Matt Reynvaan. He’s mastered his craft in the 2021 vintage, and I recommend buying as many of his wines as possible this year. In a blind, you wouldn’t miss calling this wine from The Rocks District. I get how Syrahs from the area can be polarizing, and people either love them and think they are the best Syrahs in the world, or they can’t understand how people would want to drink them. It’s funky and meaty with incredible amounts of crushed rock, saline, star anise, toasted cloves, black olive tapenade, and shades of grilled grapefruit. Tannins are silky smooth with perfected levels of acidity. Better in 2024, and then cellar this one for the next 15 years. Run, don’t walk, to find a bottle of this phenomenal wine. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.
