Light to medium ruby-blue core with a fluorescent purple rim in the glass, the 2022 La Côte Rousse Syrah from Betz is phenomenal and is made by master winemaker Louis Skinner. Purple flowers pop on the nose to start, moving to gorgeous notes of freshly picked marionberries, grilled beef ribs, olive brine, white peppercorn, scorched herbs, and pink grapefruit pith. Expansive and brood across the palate, it’s incredibly well made and has the stuff to age for a decade or more. Tannins are sweet and a bit grippy, while the perfected levels of acidity help with the spicy and complex finish. Highly recommended and editor’s choice. Better in 2025.
