The 2016 Howell Mountain Cabernet from Cliff Lede is absolutely outstanding in this vintage. The fruit was sourced from high-elevation vineyards in the Howell Mountain appellation, with vines planted to volcanic soils that consist of decomposed volcanic ash called tufa, and red volcanic rock/clay that is high in iron. These characteristics are beautifully reflected in the wine as it offers wonderful aromatics of ripe black cherries, black currants, spices, dried loam, crushed florals, mocha, pencil shavings, earthy minerals and forest herbs that all take shape. On the palate this is full-bodied and well-structured with beautifully polished tannins and outstanding concentration as it goes on to display excellent length with flavors of black fruits, graphite, loam and bittersweet chocolate all leave a lasting impression. While this is already fantastic, it would be best to allow this a few more years of bottle age, as this possesses the characteristics to age gracefully for many years to come.
