The 2017 'Coche' from Niepoort is a fascinating wine, and a testament to the potential whites can from the Douro can reach. This utterly captivating wine is composed of a few indigenous Portuguese varieties, including Rabigato, Viosinho and Códega do Larinho all sourced from old vines planted in mica schist soils. The wine itself beings with wonderful aromatics of fresh citrus, tangerine zest, saline minerals, vanilla blossoms and subtle hints of buttered pecans that all come together magnificently in the glass. On the palate this is bright and vibrant, yet also has a beautiful textured mouthfeel that persists through the finish. This is a simply delightful wine, and readers who enjoy Burgundy should find this extremely interesting and get a great deal of pleasure out of this sensational white Douro from Dirk Niepoort.
