The 2012 Canalicchio di Sopra is an utterly captivating Brunello from this excellent vintage in Montalcino. While a bit reserved at first, this gorgeous wine slowly unwinds to incredible aromas of dark cherries and red plums woven together with leather, spices, minerals, herbs, balsamic and hints of forest floor all coming together beautifully in the glass. This is most impressive for its elegant, yet brawny structure, which demonstrates remarkable balance and finesse, along with a lovely touch of underlying acidity keeping it fresh and inviting. The finish is long and polished with flavors of red fruits and leathery notes that linger beautifully. This is already extremely compelling, however it also has the potential age gracefully for decades. (Best 2019-2035) - March, 2017 (JD)
