The 2016 Côtes du Rhône is an outstanding showing in this vintage from Auguste Clape. Made from 100% Syrah (whole cluster ) sourced from a small parcel in Saint Péray and a parcel near the village of Cornas. About 2% of the blend is free run juice from young vine Cornas, which all spends 6 months in cement cuves and 6 months in foudres. The wine itself is already extremely impressive, displaying textbook Northern Rhône characteristics, beginning with a gorgeous dark purple color and aromas of black berries, dark cherries, olive, pepper, smoke, damp earth and minerals all taking shape. On the palate this is medium-bodied with a lovely velvety texture, which displays excellent overall balance and concentration through the finish. Utterly captivating, this is a serious Côtes du Rhône which is already showing plenty of appeal as a young wine and should also continue to evolve and drink beautifully for quite some time.
