AMALAYA Malbec 2014

This Malbec has 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah included in the blend. The vines were grown at over 5000 feet above sea level. Grapes are hand-harvested in small 30-pound boxes and hand-sorted at the winery. A four-day cold maceration adds colour, followed by an extended maceration in stainless steel tanks for three weeks. Secondary malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel prior to aging for 10 months, with 40% of the wine in once-used French oak barrels prior to fining and bottling. The wine opens with aromas of smoked meats, violets, blueberry compote and mocha. This leads to flavors of blackberry, blueberry, milk chocolate and sage. This has nice richness, considering the price point but has a little edge to it. Amazingly this has 540,000 bottles produced, so there is a ton to go around. (Best 2015-2020) - November, 2015 (OB)
