The 2018 'Ontogeny' is another excellent release from Russell Bevan, which as always, is composed from a blend of the vineyard designate sites. Displaying a pitch dark, inky color, this offers expressive aromatics of ripe boysenberries and black cherries which are woven together with violets, tilled soil, dark florals, graphite shavings and hints of fresh sage that explode from the glass. On the palate this possesses a rich full body that is well-structured and layered. It goes on to display remarkable depth and concentration as it comes to an end with a long supple finish that lingers on. While the 2018 is already very expressive, it should also go on to evolve marveously for at least two decades.
