The 2017 'Avoyelles' is another utterly remarkable release from Patria in this vintage. Composed of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot which was co-fermented in open top puncheons then pressed to 100% new oak. The wine itself bursts open with stunning aromas of ripe black currants and black cherries which are laced with nuances of fresh violets, sweet spices, iron, savory herbs and hints of earthy minerals that all take shape as this unwinds in the glass. This continues to impress as it displays a gorgeous full body that is impeccably structured and beautifully balanced, showing just enough acidity to provide a wonderful sense of freshness. Layered and concentrated, this is an absolute gem from Tony Biagi that is excellent today, but should have an even brighter future ahead.
