R. LOPEZ DE HEREDIA Rioja Reserva 'Viña Tondonia' 2007

The R. Lopez Heredia 'Viña Tondonia Reserva' Rioja is sensational showing from a generally a challenging, low-yielding vintage in Rioja. This is a gorgeous blend of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacho (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (10%) that was aged for six years before bottling. Needing an hour in the decanter to fully evolve, it eventually beings to fully express itself, showing aromatics of pretty red cherry cordial and wild blackberry tones that are woven together with dark licorice, pencil shavings, leather and suggestions of wild mushroom that all take shape in the glass. The palate is round and generous, showing a complex flavor profile of black cherry compote, menthol, umami and suggestions of orange rind undertones that all sing in unison. It goes on to impress as it displays a wonderful combination of freshness and verve through the finish. Overall, this is an absolutely outstanding Rioja from this legendary house that should drink beautifully for years to come.
