The 2016 Duckhorn Three Palms Vineyard Merlot is another stellar release by the talented Renee Ary. This Merlot has 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec, and as was aged in 100% new French oak for eighteen months. As this slowly unwinds in the glass it exudes wonderful characteristics of ripe chocolate covered bing cherry and shades of sweet pipe tobacco that mingle with the dusty terroir nuances that all take shape. The palate is plush, giving an err of decadence, as the rich velvety mouthfeel gives a feel of opulence. Wonderful glavors of ripe dark cherries, black forest cake and dark licorice collide with dusty minerals and cigar box and linger on the finish. This stunning Merlot possesses the potential cellar well for decades, however it is already outstanding at this early stage.
