RELIC Cabernet Sauvignon, La Place Vineyard 2016

This vintage marks the first release of this stunning Cabernet from Mike Hirby, and his first single vineyard Cabernet for Relic. La Place is a small 1-acre vineyard managed by Jim Barbour. It is situated along the Eastern hills, just south of Calistoga and consists of well-drained rocky soils. The La Place Cabernet is composed from clones, 8, See, and 4, which spent 21 months in 100% new French oak. The wine itself is simply fantastic as it instantly opens up with seductive aromas of fresh blackberries and cassis woven together with freshly tilled soil, roasted coffee, crushed violets and dried exotic spices that all emerge seamlessly from the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied, but remarkably well balanced, with a gorgeous touch of acidity elegantly framing the ripe dark fruits. Showing excellent poise, this polished and beautifully crafted Cabernet continues to impress with its remarkable combination of power and elegance as it heads into the long, sleek finish. This is a total beauty that is already drinking exceptionally well as a young wine, however it also possesses the characteristics to age brilliantly.
