The 2016 Sugarloaf Vineyard Merlot is a one time only bottling and it is a simply fabulous release. Aperture and winemaker Jesse Katz, have worked with this vineyard in the past, primarily utilizing it for blending, but the the fruit was such high quality in this vintage they felt the need to showcase it on its own. This decision was well worth it, as this stunning Merlot includes a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and immediately bursts open with profound aromas of ripe crème de cassis and blueberries woven together with baking spices, mocha, violets, black olive and an underlying dusty character. On the palate this is full-bodied with nicely polished tannins and incredible depth. Plush, layered and remarkably concentrated, this goes on to impress as it retains a wonderful sense of freshness through the long supple finish, making it nearly impossible to resist. While this is simply delightful now, it should also go on to evolve beautifully for at least a decade.
