The 2016 Calderara Sottana Rosso is simply stunning wine from this outstanding Cru on northern slope of the Mount Etna, consisting of volcanic ash specked by black pumice and solid volcanic rock. The wine itself is 98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio, from vines between 50 and 100 years old and instantly begins with inviting aromatics of bright red berries, cherries and cassis woven together with smoldering ash, fresh florals, citrus zest and a lovely mineral character all taking shape. On the palate this displays striking elegance and purity, as it continues to impress with its remarkable balance and finesse through the finish. A total beauty, which is already showing a ton of appeal, yet should age remarkably well for many years to come.
