Heitz Cellar – 2019 Vintage
Latest Releases from Heitz Cellar:
Heitz Cellar is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic and historically significant wineries, known for its unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking and the expression of terroir. Founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz, the estate played a pioneering role in establishing Napa Valley as a world-class wine region. It gained particular acclaim for its Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon—first produced in 1966—which became one of California’s first single-vineyard wines and remains one of its most celebrated.
Located in the heart of the St. Helena AVA, Heitz Cellar owns and sources from some of the most respected vineyards across Napa Valley, including Martha’s Vineyard in Oakville, Trailside Vineyard in Rutherford, and Linda Falls Vineyard on Howell Mountain. These distinct sites contribute to the depth and complexity of their wines, which are crafted in a timeless style emphasizing balance, elegance, and ageworthiness over sheer power.
Heitz is unique among Napa producers in its commitment to aging wines before release, particularly its Cabernets, which typically see four to five years of aging in French oak and bottle before reaching the market. This practice results in wines that are remarkably integrated, restrained, and ready to drink upon release, yet capable of further development in the cellar.
In 2018, Heitz Cellar entered a new chapter when it was acquired by Gaylon Lawrence Jr. and placed under the stewardship of master sommelier and estate director Carlton McCoy Jr. Since then, the team has invested heavily in vineyard management—transitioning to organic and biodynamic practices—and refining the winery’s focus on site-driven, terroir-expressive wines. While honoring its heritage, Heitz is evolving with a renewed emphasis on precision and sustainability.
We recently had the pleasure of tasting the newest 2019 releases alongside Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy and the CEO of Lawrence Estate Wines. These wines impressed with their purity and freshness, crafted in a beautifully restrained, classic Napa Valley style. They strike an exceptional balance between depth and finesse, showcasing the kind of structure and elegance that promises excellent aging potential.
