Jesse Katz, a native of Colorado, was introduced to the world of winemaking through his early travels to renowned vineyards and wineries across the globe with his father, the esteemed photographer Andy Katz. These experiences instilled in him a deep reverence for the artistry and creativity inherent in winemaking. It was observing his father’s work that allowed Jesse to appreciate the significance of terroir, balance, and the profound impact a winemaker can have, setting him on a lifelong path in the industry. Today, Jesse is known for crafting distinctive and sophisticated wines for his brands, Aperture Cellars and Devil Proof Vineyards, while also lending his expertise as a consulting winemaker for some of the world’s top wine programs. Since his beginnings as a first-generation talent straight out of college, Jesse has risen to become one of the most respected and accomplished winemakers globally.
Jesse’s extensive experience, spanning 23 harvests at various wineries, combined with his passion for travel, fueled his aspiration to learn from the best in the field. After completing his studies at Fresno State’s Department of Viticulture and Enology, he embarked on a journey of learning and discovery. From studying in Bordeaux at Pétrus to refining his craft at prestigious establishments like Screaming Eagle Winery in Napa Valley and Viña Cobos and Bodega Noemia in Argentina, Jesse absorbed insights and honed his skills. In 2010, he made waves by becoming the youngest head winemaker in the U.S. at Lancaster Estate, where his leadership saw the development of the new Roth winery, production facility, and tasting room.
In addition to his winemaking endeavors, Jesse has collaborated with prominent figures in the entertainment industry, including Von Miller, Tony Hawk, and Justin Timberlake. His partnership with Shep Gordon under The Setting Wines label made headlines in 2017 when their collaboration produced the most expensive 750ml bottle of wine ever sold. Jesse broke his own record in 2021 with a 6L bottle of his Cabernet Sauvignon fetching $1 million, setting a new world record.
Jesse’s wines have garnered widespread acclaim from leading wine critics. Jeremy Young of International Wine Report, along with other esteemed wine reviewers, has recently given Jesse perfect scores of 100 points.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jesse is deeply committed to philanthropy. Devil Proof, Aperture, and The Setting Wines actively support charitable causes, donating cases of wine and custom winery experiences each year. Jesse’s dedication to giving back has resulted in over $5.8 million raised for charities and foundations since the inception of his brand.
