The Sur Echalas Vineyard Syrah is absolutely scintillating and easily one of the most impressive young wines I have tasted from the incredibally talented winemaking team at Horsepower Vineyards. It begins with a downright stunning bouquet lead by dark berries followed by green peppercorn black licorice, umami, salted charcuterie and green olive tapenade that all come together beautifully. The palate displays incredible freshness and a gorgeous saline character, underlined by mouth-watering acidity that makes this nearly impossible to resist. It further impresses as flavors of seaweed, black truffle shavings, cigar box, salted smoked meats and shades of blackberry cobbler all build with wonderful tension leading up to the incredibaly precise finish. The 2016 delivers on all levels and is nothing short of sensational today, and should also offer a drinking window that spans well over a decade long.
