The Reserve block at Groth's estate vineyard spans 27.8 acres and is set on Yolo loam and gravel soil. This wine was aged in 100% French oak for 25 months prior to bottling. They have elected to blend 24% Hillside Vineyard Merlot into the Cabernet wine. Head winemaker Michael Weis has crafted a stunning Cabernet in this vintage, as the 2013 Groth 'Reserve' bottling is every bit as good as the gorgeous 2012. This massive Cabernet opens with an aromatic profile of creosote, dark chocolate, pencil shavings, blackberry preserves and espresso bean which continue to bring you back to the glass for more. Dense on the mid-palate, the wine has flavors reminiscent of anise, crème de cassis, black forest cake and an absolutely gorgeous texture. There is a seamless quality to this dense, fruit-driven Cabernet which maintains wonderful definition in this warm vintage. Today, this benefits from extended air contact, but it would be best to hold on to this for at least another few years. (Best 2017-2035) - November, 2016 (OB)
