The 2013 ‘Ciel du Cheval’ is an outstanding blend of 39% Cabernet Franc, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot and 8% Merlot. This is another example of how winemaker Ben Smith skillfully allows different varietals to intermingle, each one playing a role in a great overall production. The restrained nose brings forth dark fruit and pencil shavings, followed by black pepper and licorice on the palate which all persist effortlessly through the long finish. The structure of the wine should allow this one to age gracefully for many years. Today, this wine is a bit tightly wound, and should benefit from a few more years in bottle to fully unwind.
