The 2006 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Aquilon is absolutley massive, displaying a menacing pitch dark glass-staining color. It's loaded with rich aromas and flavors of black currant and cassis backed by both sweet and savory notes. Milk chocolate, cocoanut, coffee and creme brûlée are intertwined with some savory notes of spices, pepper, olive and endive adding to the layers of complexity. Dense and highly concentrated with impeccable power and depth, but remains fresh for such a huge wine. The structure is there to hold this wine together and it also balances out the 16% alcohol making it hardly noticeable. Polished tannins work their way into the mouth-coating finish leaving you with a mouthful of dark fruits. This style is not for everyone, but if you crave a monster of a wine then seek this out.
