2015 TOP 100 WINES | Rank #20
The 2013 Vieilles Vignes is an absolutely compelling Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine Grand Veneur which comes from vines 50 to 100+ years old, planted on red clay soils covered with pebble stones. It displays a dark inky color, followed by wonderful aromas of dark plums, cherries and raspberries are woven together with lavender, graphite, wet stones and a wonderful savory character of licorice, pepper, spices and a touch of smoke. This well structured, balanced blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah possesses a gorgeous seamless texture with excellent depth and impressive concentration. Dark fruits and spices continue to resonate on the long, caressing finish. This becomes accessible with extended air, but will need some short-term cellaring before it hits it’s stride. Ultimately, this is one of the most successful wines from this difficult vintage and should not be missed. (Best 2018-2030) - September, 2015 (JD)
