The 2002 Denis Mortet Chambertin is absolutely stunning and drinking so beautiful right now. Upon opening, there were gorgeous notes black raspberries, spices and bacon fat on the nose. As it sat in the glass, the aromas evolved and began to show a balsamic and mushrooms character and eventually picking up some smoky tomato as well. On the palate, there was cherry cough drop and licorice, which was very apparent, framed by black raspberries, cherry cola and hints of black tea. This Chambertin showed incredible depth and complexity, while also demonstrating remarkable balance, finesse and elegance. After extended air contact it became even more elegant and finished up with a sleek, creamy finish. This wine will continue to live on for 15 years and should continue to evolve. It is what you look for in a great glass of burgundy. (Best 2013-2030) - December, 2013 (JR)
