CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION Pessac-Leognan 1998

The 1998 Chateau Haut-Brion is showing remarkably well at this stage in its evolution. It instantly impresses with its wonderful aromatic profile of dried red berries and dark plums, laced with dried scorched earth, black truffles, tobacco, cedar box, spices and crushed gravel that all comes together gracefully. On the palate this offers a gorgeous full-body that is nicely structured with fine-grained tannins and seamless texture. Everything works together beautifully as this shows remarkable balance and and sophistication all the way through the elegant finish. The 1998 is a total beauty today, yet also has the potential to offer a drinking window that could span another decade.

The 1998 Haut-Brion is a truly spectacular wine, even after almost two decades of bottle age this is still displays a very youthful edge. It instantly releases aromas of blackberries and dark currants followed by leather, tobacco and smoke before layering in those classic Graves nuances of wet stones and fresh minerals. The full body still shows a firm, even muscular tannin structure, while remaining remarkably balanced is it continues to impress with a seamless transition into the layered finish where it grips hold and lingers. This is absolutely outstanding today, that being said, there is also still a long bright future for this truly great bottle.
