The 2014 Old Vines Reserva is a spectacular showing from this renowned estate in the Douro Valley. Winemaker Manuel Lobo has assembled this wine from 25 to 30 different grapes varieties from vines as old as 70 years. This expressive red opens to profound aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, toast, black olive, coffee, sweet spices and eucalyptus. The palate is full-bodied, balanced and well structured, showing notable depth and concentration through the long finish. This spent 18 months in 85% in French oak barrels and 15% in American oak barrels, and while its influence is quite evident at this early stage, I expect that to fade as it evolves over time.
