PASSOPISCIARO, Contrada Porcaria (P) 2011

The ‘Contrada Porcaria’ is situated at 650 meters above sea level, which is a lower elevation then most of the other Crus of Passopisciaro. The soils here are very unique, composed of frail lava sheets that splinter under one’s feet, which is only one reason the real estate here is extremely sought after. The 2011 is an absolutely striking showing, as it slowly unwinds in the glass, it begins to release beautiful aromas of freshly crushed strawberries and sweet wild berries along with rose petal, tar, smoky minerals, and even some savory notes begin to emerge. This possesses wonderful structure, balance and finesse, yet plenty of depth and a silky texture that will instantly win you over. There is so much to look forward to with this 'Porcaria', as it constantly evolves in the glass and should continue to do so for many years to come. Overall, this is a remarkably elegant and pure expression of Nerello Mascalese from Andrea Franchetti that I would love to see again in a decade from now. (Best 2017-2029) - May 2014 (JD)
