The 2011 Ojai ‘Special Bottling’ Syrah is a sensational wine and really reminds me of some of the best Syrah from the Northen Rhône. The cool climate of the Solomon Hills Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley lends to the wonderful freshness and acidity found in this wine. Upon pulling the cork, this begins to burst with complex aromas of ripe plums, dark berries, smoke, ash, violets, salted meats, spices, pepper, olives, dusty minerals, espresso and forest floor. It possesses amazing structure and wonderful finesse combined with excellent balance. The finish is long and seamless, leaving behind fresh dark berries and peppery notes. Overall this is a superb wine that is showing very well today, and I expect it to continue to evolve for another decade or two. Only 2 Barrels made. (Best 2016-2031) April, 2014 (JD)
