About Aldo Conterno

In a small winemaking farm located in Monforte d'Alba, Giovanni Conterno worked along side his father Giuseppe in the production of local wine. Giovanni helped increase the production, to be sold in casks not only in Piemonte and Liguria but also as far as America. As a result, the demand for these wines grew rapidly. Giovanni then felt the need to create a superior Barolo, to be produced exclusively from the best vintages, and capable of lasting over time. In the 1920s the first Barolo reserve was bottled. At the end of the '30s Giovanni handed over the reins of the business to his son, Giacomo, who continued his father's tradition with commitment and foresight. During these years, his sons Giovanni and Aldo began to assist and follow their father in running the business. In 1961, Giovanni and Aldo began to run the estate. However, Aldo had a desire to establish a business of his own. It was for this reason that he decided, after working for a considerable time alongside his brother, to carry out the dream. He then bought the "Favot" farm and founded the estate "Poderi Aldo Conterno" in 1969.

The farmhouse “Poderi Aldo Conterno” is situated in Bussia, which is the very heart of the typical area of Barolo wine. At present, the farm, which vinifies exclusively its own grapes, consists of about 25 hectares of vineyard. Most of the ground, which is at an altitude of about 400 m. above the sea level, is located South South-West and it is made of more or less compact sand layers of grey-brown color alternated with white and bluish calcareous marls. Today, his three sons, Giacomo, Franco and Stefano Conterno who continue to make world-class wines, run the estate.

The Vineyards

The cru vineyards (Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello) located in Bussia of Monforte d’Alba, portray the real expression of the terroir. The wines which come from these vineyards, are recognized as some of the best in the world. In 1970 Conterno created Gran Bussia, made from a selection of the estate’s finest grapes and released only in the very best vintages. However, the single vineyard wines of Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello have shown to reach the high quality of the Gran Bussia. Aldo Conterno also makes outstanding wines with many varietals other than Nebbiolo, such as, Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa and Chardonnay.
