The 2017 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the finest wines made in this challenging vintage. This is an absolutely classic release from Mike and Randy Dunn that is all about elegance and precision winemaking. As this begins to slowly unwind in the glass it releases a striking aromatic profile of fresh red and dark currants, which are joined by graphite, fresh flowers, crushed gravel, tobacco and hints of herbs all coming together beautifully. On the palate this possesses a gorgeous medium to full body that is impecabbly balanced. It goes on to display remarkable structure, with firm, yet polished tannins that tightly hold everything in place all the way through the long, laser-focused finish. The 2017 Howell Mountain shows incredible restraint and poise, and it should ultimately be cellared for at least a few years to allow it a chance to soften up a bit. Nonetheless, this is a truly fascinating bottle of Cabernet that should continue to evolve gracefully for many years to come.
